What is a Calorie Part 1

A Calorie is a measurement of heat; it’s a unit of energy, etc… This is correct but what does that mean?

By definition – A calorie is the energy, or heat, it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius. What does that mean to you and me when it comes to food?  What is a Calorie in its most basic form and how can this be explained in the most clear and concise way possible?

A Calorie is simply the Fat, Carbohydrates, and Protein found in a food…PERIOD! When you check the Nutrition Facts on a food label, the total Calorie count at the top comes from adding all the Fat, Carbs, and Protein found in that food – it’s that simple! Cholesterol, Sodium, Vitamins and Minerals, etc. have absolutely nothing to do with the Calories because they’re not Calories… Figure out the total Calories in any food by using this simple formula:

1g of Fat = 9 Calories
1g of Carbs = 4 Calories
1g of Protein = 4 Calories

For example:
Vegetable oil has 14g’s of Fat, 0g’s of Carbs, and 0g’s of Protein:
14g Fat x 9cal = 126 Calories
0g Carb x 4cal = 0 Calories
0g Protein x 4cal = 0 Calories

So, one serving (1 tbsp – 15ml) of Vegetable oil has 126 total Calories.

If you were to ask a thousand people what a Calorie is, most would say “it’s the thing in food that makes us fat.” This couldn’t be more incorrect and for some reason, Calories have received a horrible reputation and are considered by many to be the enemy.

Now here’s the question? Which Calories are bad and which ones are good? I’ll explain this in my next post: “What is a Calorie part 2.”

New Year Resolution Progress Report #1

I haven’t had any wheat since December 31st and today is January
20th.  My New Years Resolution is in full swing and it’s about time I give a progress report.

With the added help from the horrifying and disturbing book Wheat Belly, I’ve lost exactly 10 pounds in the last 20 days!!!  I haven’t even been super strict – I’ve had small amounts of chocolate, ice cream, white rice, corn chips, and yogurt.  I’m still living a little but I haven’t touched ANY flour whatsoever (wheat, crackers, cereal, bread, pasta, etc.).

I run another referral business that directs Internet traffic to a huge car dealership and I pick up a check every Friday.  When I arrived today, 3 people asked if I had lost weight?!  What an amazing feeling!!

Afterwards, I went to my favorite Italian restaurant down the street and got some lunch.  I made sure to stay away from wheat and even the lovely couple that owns the place noticed the weight loss and said something too?!?!  Awesome!

This is the beginning of a beautiful separation of something that’s had a hold of me for a very long time.  So here is my challenge to you…try it for yourself!  Join me on this simple weight loss adventure and enjoy the complements – they will come faster than you think!!

Bookmark this page and give me your progress reports in the comment box…I will reply. Thank you for checking us out!

How much sugar is REALLY in your 100 calorie snack?

This is simple and easy math…  Take any box of cereal, yogurt, oatmeal or a snack bar.  Now check the carbohydrates and the fiber.  Subtract the fiber from the carbs and take whatever you’re left with and divide it by 4 (ie. 22 total grams of carbs with 2g of total fiber.  22g of carbs minus the 2g of fiber = 20g carbs left.  20g of carbs divided by 4 = 5). Your body WILL recognize those remaining carbs by turning them into 5 teaspoons of sugar!!!!!!

If you’re trying to lose weight by eating these so called “healthy carbs,” you’re stepping on little land mines throughout your day. This is sad news but cutting out this sneaky carb called “sugar” is an ESSENTIAL rule of fat loss and weight control. This little “99% fat free” snack actually has 8.25 teaspoons of sugar (which is the calorie that actually turns into fat)!  If you were to sprinkle 8.25 teaspoons of sugar on your grapefruit in the morning, people would look at you like you were crazy.  Now if they were to wrap it in a pretty wrapper and call it healthy, you’d believe anything.

Check your label and try your best to completely remove “calories from sugar” from your diet.

Wheat Belly Was The Scariest Book I’ve Ever Read!!!

My name is Joe and I love food…I’m a true addict.  This is my first post on my new site that my brother Clint and I just started.  I’m very excited to share the knowledge I’ve gained over the last 16 years as well as my personal experience so that I can help people and make a difference in the world.

It exhausts me to watch people (myself included) walk around and not be happy about their bodies and not be informed about the truth and the simplicity of what health really is.  The hospitals are full and we don’t have a fighting chance unless we stand up and get the word out.

My new years resolution has been to stop eating all wheat products indefinitely.  I’ve been lifting weights and doing cardio for years, but I keep growing in my stomach area because I’m addicted to wheat and carbs.  On January 3rd, I began reading Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis.  His book is easily one of the scariest books I’ve ever read.  If you want to put a stop to the craziness and really get informed, I think you should read this book!

I was searching through audible.com and stumbled upon his book and began listening.  It captivated me because he was talking about me as well as half the people I know.  I often find myself talking about the problems that are written in that book and I finished his book within 4day’s.

I learned about the book by listening to Jimmy Moore’s podcast: The Livin La Vida low Carb Show.  I’d like to personally thank him for everything he’s ever put on his podcast and blog because he’s completely and totally changed my view about nutrition and fitness.  Thank you Jimmy…job well done!.

When I find myself eating things made from wheat, I find myself continuously craving these types of foods.  It’s like this strange demon that whispers “EAT,” and it doesn’t stop with bread.  Chocolate and sugars do the same thing to me and it literally makes me feel weak.

Since the 1st of 2012, I haven’t touched ANY wheat or sugar and my sweet tooth has pretty much subsided.  His book also goes into ADHD, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, weight gain, cancer and many other diseases that have been linked to or are caused by too much of this genetically modified wheat.  It’s in so many of the things we put into our bodies on a daily basis without even thinking.

We have created this site a hub and directory so that people can easily find a way to get helpful tips.  From fitness, nutrition, how to lift weights, great books and podcast to listen to while your in your car, etc.  I hope you bookmark this page and keep coming back for more because we will NEVER stop searching for the truth. N299ZCDGR7SX It’s our promise to stay on the forefront of nutrition and fitness and deliver it in the most clear and concise way possible for YOU!  Thank you for checking out our blog.
